Carisbrook Falls
Of
the waterfalls along the Great Ocean Road this would have to be the
highest, although the drop is not vertical. This waterfall is best
seen shortly after heavy rain as the cascade is very wide and its
catchment is relatively small.
The walking track to the base of the falls is across the creek
from the carpark and follows the creek. It appears to have been
largely forgotten and shows almost no sign of maintenance. The
sign at the junction of the track (left to the toilets, right to the
falls) is also missing and a warning sign regarding wet and slippery
rocks is almost completely overgrown (but fear not, there's another
one later on).
The approach to the base of the falls is not an easy one and does
require scrambling over large, very slippery rocks, as well as
negotiating stinging nettles and blackberries.
Another walking track leaves the carpark and heads upwards along
the eastern side of the gorge to a viewing area. This gives you an
excellent view of the falls.
The track then switches back and upwards, but there is
"Strictly no access" on this section of track. If on the
off chance you missed the sign and orange mesh you would find
yourself following the track higher up the side of the gorge,
eventually heading back towards the falls. The track then ends
abruptly with yet another sign stating the bleeding obvious:
"DANGER. Track ends here. Do not enter. This track will be
completed when funds permit |
