Erskine Falls
No access to the base of the falls during construction of a new
boardwalk and viewing platform (commencing 22/5/2000)

Falls is probably the most well known waterfall of the Otways and
one of the most visited. A short drive north of Lorne, it is also
possible to walk along the Erskine River from Lorne to the Falls.
Well made steps lead down from the carpark to the river and this is
oddly as far as most people walk with only a relative few setting
off to explore around the bottom of the waterfall. While the water
level of the river may drop in summer there is usually enough water
to form the characteristic thin ribbon all year round.
I returned again recently to discover that the road has now been
sealed all the way to the turn off to the falls. It's a great
improvement on the greasy clay surface that saw tourists driving all
over the road to avoid the corrugations without thinking about
oncoming traffic. The reason for my return..... Check out these
360° panoramas below the falls.
Another return (May 2000) and some more developments are taking
place. At the base of the steps is a new sign: "No walking
beyond this point. Slippery rocks ahead."... yeah right!.
The original track was made in 1890 and for 110 years people have
been slipping and sliding their way to the base of the falls. And if
you think that's too difficult for your average tourist, try walking
in to the base of Carrisbrook Falls.
But not content with that (and in keeping with their slogan of
"Building Better Parks") a new boardwalk and viewing
platform are being constructed from May 22 onwards. This was my last
chance to photograph the falls in a relatively natural state so I
fired off a few panoramas from different positions. I'll go back and
redo them after the viewing platform is completed and you can decide
for yourself which is better. More pics coming...
