Welcome to the Department of Pathology
The Department of Pathology is one of the foundation departments within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Department employs over 80 EFT on campus and has an annual budget in excess of $6 million. The Department has a strong presence in the University of Melbourne teaching hospitals via the academic pathology units in each hospital, as well as associations with respective research institutes.
The key focus areas for the Department are:
Teaching and Education
- Undergraduate science, optometry, dental, physiotherapy and medical students’ courses
- Postgraduate teaching in FRCPA, FRACP programs
- Postgraduate students in BScHons, MSc, MMed, MD and PhD
Advocacy for the Disciplines of Pathology
- Thorough representation at government (Federal and State), Royal Colleges, hospital, specific interest groups and in community forums.
Research
- Major research programs in multiple disciplines including neuropathology and haematology
- Leadership in educational research related to multimedia based learning packages.
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences comprises seven Schools: Medicine (consisting of 23 academic departments), Behavioural Science, Dental Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Population Health and Rural Health. In addition, the Faculty Education Unit, the Faculty International Unit, the Faculty IT Unit and the Faculty Centre for Neuroscience have been established at Faculty level.
The Faculty is one of 11 Faculty (Academic Budget Divisions) groupings in the University. It is the University’s largest faculty in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and general staff, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students and the conduct of basic and applied research.
The Faculty’s recurrent fund budget is about $53M, and also manages income from other sources, including research grants, fee income, trust funds and bequests totaling approximately $129M. The Faculty had a student teaching load in 2004 of 5,822 equivalent full-time student units (4,539 other than higher degree, 1,282 higher degree ) with a total staff of about 1,338 full-time equivalent (371 teaching and research, 535 research only and 432 general staff).
