The Department of Pathology offers postgraduate degrees in:
Higher degrees open up careers in research, and candidates develop a range of laboratory, communication and analytical skills.
Research in pathology will appeal to you if your interest areas lie in:

- How it affects the body
- Potential treatments
Postgraduate students are based either in the Department or at one of our affiliated institutions.
Various types and combinations of laboratory techniques may be used in research, such as a range of imaging modalities, molecular biology incorporating proteomic and genomics and immunological and tissue culture techniques.

The Department conducts research on campus and at a number of affiliated sites. Specific projects may be focussed at one particular site, or students may work in a number of labs under combined supervision.

How to apply for a postgraduate degree
Approach the lab head of a group with research interests related to your own, or submit a research proposal and your CV to pathology-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au.
Refer to the honours project booklet for styles of projects conducted in the Department.
Negotiate with supervisors and decide on a project, then apply formally.
- International postgraduate students should use the international application form, and return to the International Centre.
- Local PhD students should use the PhD application form, and submit to reception on level 5 of the Medical Building and take the signed lodgement form to the School of Graduate Studies.
- Local Master of Science students should use the Master of Science application form. Submit the application to reception on level 5 of the Medical Building and take the signed lodgement form to the School of Graduate Studies.

Scholarship Information
The Melbourne Scholarships Office co-ordinate undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships available at the University of Melbourne.
- International scholarship applications for students not yet enrolled must be received by the Melbourne Scholarships Office by 31st August for the following year.
- Local students must apply through SCHOLS by 31st October for the following year.
- International students already enrolled in their course must apply through SCHOLS by 31st October for the following year.
Facilities for postgraduate students:
Students have access to a variety of facilities and services, both in the Department and across the University, including:
- Student induction kit and Departmental Guides
- Access to local, STD and ISD telephones (where required)
- Access to the comprehensive University libraries, and to interlibrary loans
- Computer facilities and desks for each student, including internet and email access
- IT support
- Locker space
- Photocopying
- Use of pigeon holes, internal and external mail
- Use of stationery and consumable items
- 24 hour building access
Postgraduate students are encouraged to attend skills development programs run through the School of Graduate Studies.
