Mount Howitt

[ alpine013 ] Mount Howitt is the highest mountain in the Moroka Wonangatta Unit of the Alpine National Park and is a very popular location for a number of reasons. The novelty of snow always attracts hikers and patches of snow sometimes persist right into the new year. It is also located at the junction of several walking tracks and lunchtime in the summer sees the mountain crawling with hikers.

[ alpine016 ] It's a wonderful place to hike, despite names on the map like the Devil's Staircase (pictured), Hell's Window, the Terrible Hollow, Mt Despair, etc... From Mt Howitt you can look across to Mt Buller with it's ski runs carved out of the forest. This region of the Alpine National Park has managed to escape virtually all commercial development but the threat of mobile phone towers still looms.

The road to Howitt is closed during the winter, but entries in the log book at the hut show that people still ski out here in winter. Most of these people usually make food drops in autumn and then return again in summer to pick up their rubbish.

Mt Speculation from Mt Howitt and vice versa

  • One of my better panoramas... Mt Howitt and the Crosscut Saw, September 1999.
  • Perhaps the most popular walk around Mt Howitt is the Crosscut Saw across to Mt Speculation.
